LESSON 18 OF 30 · WORKPLACE WORDS · 3 MIN READ
Ask for more time professionally
Explain a delay, propose a realistic deadline, and agree on priorities.
If a deadline is becoming difficult to meet, communicate as early as you reasonably can. A useful request gives enough information for someone to decide what to do next.
State the situation
“The final figures arrived this morning, and I need more time to check the report.” Explain the relevant facts without a long list of excuses.
Propose a specific deadline
“Would it be possible to move the deadline to Thursday at 2 pm?” This is clearer than “Can I send it later?” Only suggest a time you believe is realistic.
An extension is extra time beyond the original deadline: “I’d like to request an extension until Thursday.”
Offer an alternative when useful
“I can send the completed sections today if that would help.” This may allow another person to continue their work, but do not promise an alternative you cannot deliver.
If the deadline cannot move, ask which part matters most: “Which sections should I prioritise for today’s review?”
Your turn
Rewrite “I need extra time” with a reason and a specific proposed deadline.
See a possible answer
“I need to check the new figures before submitting the report. Could I send it by 11 am tomorrow?” The recipient can now assess both the reason and the timing.
