LESSON 23 OF 30 · EVERYDAY GRAMMAR · 4 MIN READ
Use the past simple for completed work
Describe past actions and form questions and negatives correctly.
Use the past simple to describe completed actions at a finished time: “I submitted the report yesterday.” It is useful for talking about projects and past responsibilities.
Regular and irregular verbs
Many verbs add -ed: check → checked, finish → finished. Some change differently: send → sent, write → wrote, make → made.
“I wrote the summary and sent it to the team.” Learn irregular forms in short, useful sentences rather than only as isolated words.
Use the base form after “did”
Question: “Did you send the email?”
Negative: “I didn’t send the email.”
The past meaning is already carried by did, so say “didn’t send,” not “didn’t sent.”
Treat “be” differently
“I was responsible for registrations.” “They were available yesterday.” Questions invert the verb: “Were they available?” Do not add “did” in this pattern.
Your turn
Correct these two sentences: “Did you checked the figures?” and “I didn’t wrote the notes.”
Show the answers
“Did you check the figures?” and “I didn't write the notes.” Both use the base form after “did.” Compare the positive statements: “You checked the figures” and “I wrote the notes.”
