LESSON 08 OF 30 · INTERVIEW ENGLISH · 3 MIN READ

Ask for a moment to think

Handle an unfamiliar interview question with a calm, clear response.

You do not have to begin every answer immediately. A brief pause can help you choose a relevant example and organise your thoughts.

Use a simple phrase

“Let me think of a relevant example.”

“May I take a moment to think about that?”

Say the phrase once, pause, and then answer. Repeating it many times can distract from your response.

Clarify the question when needed

If you are unsure what is being asked, try: “Do you mean how I handled the deadline or how I worked with the team?” This gives the interviewer a clear choice.

If you did not hear a word, say: “Could you repeat the last part, please?” Asking for repetition is different from asking for time to think.

Be honest about your knowledge

“I haven’t used that tool yet, but I have used a similar one” is useful only if it is true. Explain what you know and how you would approach learning the missing part.

Your turn

You heard the question but need to remember an example. Write a suitable response before pausing.

See a possible answer

“Let me think of a relevant example.” If you understood the question, you do not need to ask the interviewer to repeat it.
