LESSON 04 OF 30 · INTERVIEW ENGLISH · 3 MIN READ

Answer “Why do you want this role?”

Connect your interests and experience to the work described in a vacancy.

This question is a chance to explain why the work interests you. Read the role description and identify a responsibility you would like to take on.

Connect interest to evidence

Use three parts: what interests you, what you bring, and what you hope to develop.

“I’m interested in this support role because I enjoy helping people solve problems. During a college event, I answered visitors’ questions. I’d like to develop those skills while learning your support process.”

The example is illustrative. Change it to fit the actual vacancy and your own background.

Use the right preposition

Say “interested in this role”, not “interested on this role.” After “interested in,” you can also use an -ing form: “I’m interested in working with customers.”

Be specific about the organisation

If you mention a company’s work, check that the information is accurate. Avoid praise that could be copied into any application. One relevant detail is enough.

Your turn

Complete: “I’m interested ___ this role because ___. My experience with ___ would help me ___.”

Check the language

The missing preposition is “in.” The rest of the answer depends on you. Name a responsibility from the vacancy and a real experience that connects to it.
